Good news day

I'm being a big flake this weekend. I was planning on heading down to Santa Cruz to start schlepping stuff to Goodwill and the dump and storage, but I opted to spend the whole weekend hiding out here in SF with Joel, feeling kind of under the weather and sleeping late. I guess that i'm having trouble adjusting to all the added responsibility of home ownership. The mortgage gets paid, I collect the rent, but I'm still paying for a lot of creature comforts for a household i'm rarely in. I need to knock that off. I don't want to be totally uncool towards the guy living there, he's sort of looking after the house and things while I figure my stuff out, and he's having to adjust as well, but i'm not going to pay for his cable TV and internet access and utilities. Buh. He'll get used to it, I guess.

So, today, after i'd given up hope of hearing from her, I got a phonecall from the woman who wants someone to share the rent on her art studio and she said "I'd love for you to share the studio." Yay! Yay! Yay! So we're going to get together around the 15th and I'll move my stuff in, and sign the lease, and everything. It's going to be fantastic having a space to go do some art.

In other news, I've decided to try to learn to read hiragana and katakana. It's fun! I bought these cute puzzles with all of the characters and cute little happy anpanman cartoon characters and it makes the whole process a lot sillier. I'm now running around finding katakana and hiragana and reading it slowly, sounding it out, referring to this big childish colorful puzzle when I get confused. It's probably kind of irritating for others, but it's exciting for me.

Standing around mumbling!
Yes! Yes! Standing around staring at things and mumbling! I did this all the time when I was learning Middle Egyptian hieroglyphs. I did it especially in museums (I gave it up when I found myself in London standing in front of the Rosetta Stone mumbling - I decided that was just too pretentious). But I did a lot of staring at license plates, too. Like Hebrew, hieroglyphs don't have any vowels, so people's license plates can say the most interesting things.
