Committing an Act of Heresy.

I'm going to drop the bomb... The bomb being, well...

I've never liked the Ramones. Still don't. Really.

No, Really.

Sure, I tap my foot when I hear it, but I've never been truly "down".

I'm sorry some people died young, but I can't get worked up over their irrelevant adolescent pop tunes.

RIP to the fallen "tuhhhhwenny-twenny-twenny-four hours to go-oh-oh" Ramones, and best wishes to the remaining Ramone, but i'm still not a fan.

Really.

Of course you know this, but, I still like you if you luv the Ramones, so don't be hatin' on my blasphemous bombastic band-bashing. hugs! kisses!

it's all disposable culture anyway. the ramones will be forgotten after the collapse until after the next dark age, then some cultureless society will come along and totally rip-off the american identity like we did to acient greece and rome.

give gen-x or gun club over the ramones

One small point of contention....
...Like it or not, all you want, but 'irrelevant'? Hardly. I quoth:

"‘All the better-known punk groups that followed - The Sex Pistols, The Clash, whoever - they would be the first ones to say that without The Ramones the whole punk movement never would have happened,’ has commented Spin magazine editor-in-chief Alan Light."

I think 'spawning off an entire genre of music' is one of those things that deserves respect for the enormity of the action, myself, but I realize not everyone agrees. Still, hardly irrelevant. ;)

Re: One small point of contention....
I beg to differ with Alan Light. Okay, now first of all, I don't put all that much faith in SPIN Magazine, no offense to the hard-working pseudointellectuals and quasi-hipsters. I'm absolutely convinced that the Ramones were able to influence some, but come on, they were a product of the prevailing winds of anti-disco malaise - And here's another shocker - Sex Pistols? Bah! Cutesy pop tunesters all. Oh NOES. And let's be clear about Punk "never happening" without the Ramones, ever hear of Iggy Pop? The Stooges? New York Dolls?

I still find the music mediocre, which is what matters most to me, in the end.

There are several remaining Ramones. The main 3 have died off. Left remaining are CJ Ramone (the bassist who briefly replaced DeeDee when he left for a bit), and several drummers such as Richie, Tommy, and Marky (I'm probably missing one).

BTW, if you'd like to experiment with your appreciation of the Ramones, see "The End of the Century" which is the new documentary about the band. It gives a lot of insight of how dysfunctional they were and how the band stayed together so long.

see, this is a polite discussion.
Right on. I didn't know they swapped out members. VIVA LA RAMONES!

Is the documentary good?

Whoa. Did you grow up in a CAVE!? A cave on MARS?! Again, this is one of those things where I can't imagine not having encountered Ramones songs at one point or another.

I mean, I may not like Brittney Spears, but I am certainly aware of her existance and her harpy-like screeching is nigh-unescapable in our modern society.

Exactly where I'm at. I don't know that they were influencial as much as they were influenced. Got that impression from reading Please Kill Me : The Uncensored Oral History of Punk (at mopmonster's recommendation).

Their attitude was the coolest thing about them, I guess?

I never owned a Ramones CD either.. maybe thats because most of their discography came out before cd's existed. But i dont suppose any of you youngsters would know anything about vinyl, or NY punk, or anything else that might have to do with why you look the way you do, or what its actually like to use some artistry with your wardrobe instead of picking the sale item of the week off the rack at Hot Topic.

Dude check yo'self before you wreck yo'self
Youngsters? East Coast/West Coast now? Oh lord. My punk collection is largely on vinyl "LP's" actually. ;P and i'm about a month older than you, child, so get off of that whole avenue. I still don't like the Ramones. It's an opinion, which differs from an edict.

In the wardrobe department, I was making my own style when I was 12, ironing plastic toys in to my clothes and all sorts of really strange things I hadn't heard about in a Ramones song. Wardrobe artistry, for me, goes well beyond a black leather jacket and chucks. You don't know the first thing about who you're accusing, sweet stranger.

'rock and roll high school'

When I first heard 'rock and roll high school' I thought it was from the Grease soundtrack... I mean if you can mistake it for the Grease soundtrack, is it really punk!? When you stand it next to Jello Biafra's warbling shriek?

Sad though when a greasy counterculture icon dies, especially so young, at any rate.

I'm with you there. I have always liked their music in small doses but I have never been completely "ga-ga"* over em (or is that "gabba gabba hey!")

But as people I think they are the coolest. I got to eat breakfast with them when Marky took the whole audience of "Alex Bennet's live 105 morning show" to the little shop next door. I got to have waffles, and talk comic books with marky and joey. BTW, Joey (R.I.P.) is the ugliest motherfucker I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. seriously

but yeh...

On the same note... I wanna drop a similar bomb.
I've never liked Frank Zappa. Still don't. Really.

All my friends love him, I listen.... I don't get it. Sounds like someone raided my parents LP collection. Maybe I'm missing the "obviously he's a musical genius" gene, I dunno. His music does nothing for me. And at times when I'm subjected to his music, it has an adverse effect and makes me want to shoot the stereo. And why the fuck does everyone who likes him want to force that shit down your throat? I swear, it's like a fucking cult. They want...no... they "need" to play for me every fucking lousy album cut, show me some god damn grainy bootleg video, tell me some essentailly unimportant story how he has changed their life. Quirky experimental musician, yes... crazy cult messiah...possibly. I have met him very briefly (5 seconds of hello) and I did have dinner with his daughter Moon a few times. Very nice people. R.I.P. Frank.

* It always makes me giggle when people use the the expression "ga-ga". In Tagalog, it means stupid or retarded.

I totally hate Frank Zappa. I pull no punches. Him, and the Mothers of Invention sucked. If I wanted to listen to Oingo Boingo, i'd do so, without the creepiness.

You and your brushes with famousity. Name dropping the Moon Unit, verra nice. :) And hey howdy, let's hang out soon, no kidding this time!
